Does the Indian Public lack self-esteem?

Why is it that we are willing to put up with the self-satisfied smugness of Indian celebrities, especially politicians, cricketers and films stars?

1. Please tell me why traffic is halted when any 2-bit politician travels the streets? Doesn't happen in the US, I can tell you that.
2. All the politicians travel with massive entourages, especially on foreign junkets. How come there is no accountability?
3. Why do film stars and cricketers warrant massive security at the tax payer's expense? Don't they make enough on their own without stiffing us with the bill?
4. Why do politicians need a special VIP lane in the toll booths (check out the Pune-Mumbai Expressway)? This is appalling, considering that Expressways are public property. In all my travels, I don't recollect seeing this in any other country. Why ours, then?
